A WARNING has been issued that nearly 3,000 hospitality jobs could be at risk in Inverclyde unless urgent action is taken.

Scottish Labour election candidate Francesca Brennan is calling on the governments in Edinburgh and Westminster to step up to save those affected.

As pubs, restaurants and cafes start to reopen in uncertain times, Ms Brennan fears that people working in the trade will soon face an unemployment crisis.

The local activist wants to see the furlough scheme extended for those in the industry and says the Scottish Government must act to support businesses.

Ms Brennan, who has been selected as Labour's candidate for Inverclyde at next year's Holyrood elections, said: "Necessary social distancing measures mean businesses are unable to trade at normal levels.

"The effects of this are already being seen, with some workers having been laid off in spite of government support.

“The UK Government has responded to pressure and offered restaurants support – but only in the short-term.

"A hospitality unemployment crisis could cause serious damage – not just for the workers laid off, but for everyone in Inverclyde."

The would-be MSP points to figures showing that a substantial total of people rely on the industry for their livelihood.

She said: "With 2,860 workers employed in the sector here, Inverclyde’s economy depends on hospitality jobs.

"Our local hospitality sector needs jobs for good and extending the furlough scheme in this sector could provide a lifeline to thousands of workers.

"A quality jobs guarantee scheme could stimulate demand as well, so that when the furlough scheme ends in other sectors workers can still afford to visit our precious restaurants and bars that are so important for a thriving Inverclyde.”
