CARING beachgoers stepped in to help a stricken porpoise back into the water at Inverkip.

Onlookers noticed the porpoise on the sand, lifted it and returned it safely to the water.

Members of the public have been advised to contact British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) if they see an animal in distress.

Samantha Jane McFarlane, area co-ordinator for Clydeside, said: "I commend these members of the public for stepping in and helping.

"They showed real compassion and did the right thing in the circumstances.

"The porpoise unfortunately looked very thin and in poor body condition and is likely to strand again.

"We would urge anyone who sees an animal in distress on the beach to contact us on 01825 765546."

The rescue organisation hopes to install an information board on the beach in response to numerous strandings in recent years.
