GREENOCK residents are set to benefit from a scheme to improve local housing and fight fuel poverty following a campaign by a local councillor.

River Clyde Homes have announced that they will join an energy efficiency programme in the Cowdenknowes neighbourhood.

Councillor Tommy McVey had previously criticised housing bosses for failing to take part in phase two and three.

He was upset that residents in Cowdenknowes had missed out as a result.

Now RCH has confirmed they will take part in the next phase of the £1.2 million programme, which is going out to tender.

Councillor McVey said: "I am really pleased that RCH have decided to continue to invest in their properties in the Cowdenknowes area.

"It’s the right decision."

The ward councillor had urged RCH to act by investing in wall insulation in the area as part of a programme of work.

Housing association bosses had previously stated they were assessing what programmes they would be able to deliver this year.

Now they have given the go ahead for the work to go ahead.

Senior project manager Richard Orr said: "After careful consideration, River Clyde Homes is delighted to confirm that it will take part in the next phases of improvement works in the Cowdenknowes area of Greenock.

“We are optimistic that works that can physically be delivered in the current year amid the ongoing restrictions.

"We have communicated our decision to Inverclyde Council and its delivery partners to ensure works can commence as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We trust this commitment of significant expenditure is to the benefit of not only the tenants of River Clyde Homes but the wider area.

"Our customers should see heating costs reduce and have improved visual appeal of their home.

"We see this investment as a way to contribute to the longevity of this community that will also benefit the many homeowners in the area."
