INVERKIP has been dubbed 'Kip the Tip' after hundreds of glass bottles were abandoned around the recycling bins.

Rubbish is piling up across the ground on Main Street, creating a dangerous and unsightly spot in a busy area of the village.

Two Inverclyde Council refuse vehicles are off the road, which has affected the frequency of uplifts.

However one of the Inverkip residents who contacted the Tele to complain says she doesn't believe any additional bins in the area will make a difference.

The woman said: "By the end of last week the six glass recycling bins were full to the brim.

"It's nice to see folk can make a lovely display of glass instead of taking elsewhere.

"Quite a few bottles are.

"I am thinking of the bin men who have to individually pick up these bottles and dispose of them.

"Kip the tip is living up to its name!"

The eyesore has also been the talk of social media, with members of an Inverkip Facebook group describing the mess as 'unbelievable' and 'selfish'.

Local councillor, Ciano Rebecchi, says that this is not the first time there have been complaints about the recycling point between the children's playpark and the shops.

He is asking residents to use their common sense and hold onto their glass bottles to prevent children being injured.

Cllr Rebecchi said: "If you had a car full of people you wouldn't try and get another passenger in, so the same logic should be applied when it comes to bins.

"Rather than leaving them lined up around the facilities that are already full I would ask residents to put them in their own bin or hold onto them.

"They are being knocked over and broken glass will end up on the grass next to where the children play."

Inverclyde Council have said that staff are working tirelessly to clear the backlog of glass bottles at various recycling points as a result of two vehicles being out of action.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately collections have been disrupted due to mechanical issues with two refuse vehicles meaning they have been off the road.

"This impacted on the frequency of uplifts resulting in a build-up of glass at some neighbourhood recycling points.

"Staff are working as quickly as they can to clear the backlog and hope to be caught up by tomorrow at the latest.

"If bins are full, we ask residents to please hold onto bottles and other materials for a little while longer until there is room in the bins to dispose of them properly.

"Items should not be left at the side of bins for safety reasons.

"In addition to neighbourhood recycling points, the recycling centres at Kirn Drive in Gourock and Pottery Street in Greenock are now open."
