A ROOFER took on a 22-mile trek to support his mum in her battle with cancer.

Owen Coyle, his sister Kerryanne and their friend Ryan Stewart, organised a walk from the Port Glasgow to Celtic Park.

The charity challenge has raised almost £5,000 for Macmillan.

Devoted son Owen, 26, was inspired to make the journey after his mum Roselin was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in June.

Owen’s dad also battled the illness after being diagnosed 20 years ago and is now doing well.

Owen, who lives in West Barmoss Avenue, walked with friends and family on the day and was overwhelmed by the support he received.

He said: "After my mum's diagnosis I just knew I wanted to do something for Macmillan.

"My mum was over the moon when I told her about the walk.

"It was a great day but it was excruciating.

"We started off at Woodhall at 8am and arrived at Parkhead at 3pm.

"During the walk, I kept getting notifications on my phone from people who had donated.

"That made me even more determined to get it finished and keep raising money."

The youngest walker on the day was little Elizabeth Judge, five, who raised £100 for the cause.

The trekkers were supported by Sharon Sharp at Party Perfection, Michael Dunne at CM Coaches, the Kafay in Dubbs Road, and Kelly Devanney.

Owen's mum Roselin, 52, was at a routine check-up when doctors found cancer in her chest, breast and neck.

She had an emergency biopsy and is now taking things step-by-step - and she's so proud of the walkers for all they have achieved.

She said: "I’ve had wonderful help from the Macmillan nurses and Owen just wanted to give something back to thank them.

"He’s been amazing and his fundraising for the charity is brilliant.

"It’s so important to raise awareness, so if this encourages someone to go and get a check-up then that's a good thing."

Owen says the support of Macmillan has been invaluable in his mum's fight.

He added: "I can’t thank them enough, they’ve been great.

"Everything they have done for my family and for other families is just outstanding.

"I'm absolutely over the moon with the amount raised from the sponsored walk.

"I can't believe how generous everyone has been, especially in these really difficult times.

"The money will help Macmillan nurses who go above and beyond to help families that are affected by this horrible illness."
