INVERCLYDE'S Depute Provost David Wilson has waded into the row over the delayed reopening of the Port baths.

Several local councillors and swimmers have voiced their anger over plans to keep the pool closed until next spring.

Inverclyde Leisure bosses say this is down to financial pressures and the fact they have not been generating any income since March 18.

But Portionians feel they have been treated unfairly after Gourock pool's season has been extended until the end of October thanks to a council subsidy.

A petition is now planned to try and force Inverclyde Leisure to change their minds.

Councillor Wilson said: "I am personally disappointed that Port Glasgow Pool isn't opening.

"We are putting a lot of money into Inverclyde Leisure and it is reasonable to expect that there should be a swimming pool in a town of the size of Port Glasgow."

Inverclyde Leisure previously told the Telegraph: "We are phasing the reopening of our facilities.

"This is down to our current financial pressures and taken in to account we have been closed since mid-March not generating income.

"These facilities will eventually reopen however, like every business worldwide at the moment we are phasing these to remain viable in the foreseeable future."
