A MAN was rushed to hospital following a blaze at a property in Greenock town centre.

It broke out in a flat on the top floor of a close in Sir Michael Street around 1.30am yesterday.

Scottish Fire and Rescue sent four engines to the scene and crews managed to get the flames under control.

The SFRS said one casualty was passed into the care of Scottish Ambulance Service and taken to Inverclyde Royal for a precautionary assessment.

Police stood guard outside the property yesterday morning and a significant amount of burned out furniture could be seen outside the close.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff of Greenock CID said that the incident was being deemed 'accidental'.
