A DRUNK man set his partner's cooker on fire trying to make food for himself at 5am — then threatened to smash her windows when she challenged him.

Luke McCloy returned to the woman's Port Glasgow home in a stupor before erupting in anger after she put a stop to his dangerous kitchen antics.

McCloy ripped a curtain pole from a wall and also brandished a brick during the frightening incident on September 18, which left the woman in a state of fear and alarm.

Prosecutor Callum Forsyth told Greenock Sheriff Court: "The accused returned home and appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

"He went into the kitchen in an attempt to prepare food and he set fire to the cooker due to his level of intoxication.

"An argument then ensued."

Fiscal depute Mr Forsyth added: "The complainer was very scared.

"The accused refused to desist and his partner left and made her way to a phone box to call the police.

"The accused followed her and picked up a brick, threatening to smash the windows of her house."

The court heard that McCloy eventually threw the brick on the ground and left.

However, he later phoned in the afternoon to say he'd booted in her front door in order to collect belongings from the flat on the Port's Montgomerie Street.

Mr Forsyth said: "The complainer at this point contacted the police and officers found him at her house."

Defence lawyer David Tod said: "He has not been working during lockdown and when not in work he fills his time with drinking.

"He acknowledges he has a problem with alcohol."

Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentence for a background report and allowed McCloy bail to an address on Berwick Road on condition he doesn't approach or contact the woman in any way.

The sheriff will also give consideration to the imposition of a non-harassment order prior to the next calling of the case on November 11.
