River Clyde Homes residents have been staying busy during the coronavirus pandemic thanks to recently launched activity packs.

The affordable housing provider placed a successful bid with the Scottish Government Wellbeing Fund, meaning residents have been gifted cooking equipment such as hand mixers, scales and microwaves in an effort to help keep busy while staying at home more.

Working alongside the Inverclyde Community Action and Response Group (ICARG) and Belville Community Garden, the organisations are also offering other activity packs, such as art materials and gardening resources, for residents who feel isolated.

Delighted to receive a number of the packs were Greig family - made up of Mary and Alan and their children Rebecca, Kimberly and James - who have been painting and cooking up a storm since the materials arrived on their doorstep.

23-year-old Rebecca, a Musical Theatre student at University of West London, said: "It's been really great as we've been able to keep ourselves occupied while we've been spending more time at home.

"We're a really creative family so we've all enjoyed using the packs, it's definitely kept me busy while I've been home from University.

"My mum has enjoyed using the paints and has been practicing using new materials."

Belville Community Garden welcome referrals from River Clyde Homes customers and the wider community and packs are limited to two per person.

Laura Reilly of Belville Community Garden said: "Belville Community Garden is pleased to partner River Clyde Homes in this project.

"The activity packs will be a great boost for people: both in practical terms and also helping keep minds and bodies active."

So far, 54 people across Inverclyde have received a variety of items according to their needs and requests.

Elaine Cannon, Service Improvement Manager at River Clyde Homes, added: "We had identified through our community partnerships that many residents lacked the basic utensils to allow then to prepare and cook their own food from home.

"All the evidence shows that home-prepared food is generally a healthier and more cost effective option.

"Along with the recipe cards prepared by Belville Community Garden, we believe that we have a great package in place for those who need it most.

"The feedback on the initiative has been tremendous and people are enjoying the challenges of preparing new dishes for their families."
