POLICE probing the spate of linked petrol bomb attacks in Greenock have released details of a car believed to have been involved in one of them.

A burgundy Rover, described as being ‘old style’ and possibly a Rover 45, was seen in the Cumberland Road area of Larkfield at the time when an accelerant was thrown at the window of a property on the street in the early hours of Saturday September 19.

The occupants, a 45-year-old woman and three members of the family, including her six-year-old daughter, were not injured.

Two men seen running away from the scene got into a car matching this description before it drove off at speed in the direction of Gourock Cemetery.

Two days later a Rover 45, registration plate SD51 ZTJ, was found abandoned in a car park in Greenock's Mearns Street, 'following a short pursuit by police', which has only just been disclosed.

Officers say they're keen to talk to anyone who has information regarding this vehicle.

Detective Superintendent Gerry McBride said: “These recent fire-raisings in Inverclyde are sickening incidents, where innocent women and children have been attacked in their own homes.

"I am certain that nobody with a moral conscience would believe that this is acceptable and I urge anyone who knows who is responsible or has information to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“The increased police presence in the area will remain whilst investigations take place and to prevent any further incidents from happening."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 4105 of September 16, or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
