DETECTIVES are urgently trying to trace a man following what is believed to be a road rage incident in Greenock which has left a 64-year-old seriously ill in hospital.

Police and paramedics rushed to the man's aid in the wake of the disturbance at town's Waterfront Retail Park off Custom House Way shortly before 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

Police have confirmed that a potential weapon was 'presented' at one of the men and have launched an appeal for information which is hoped will lead them to the other.

Investigations have so far revealed that there appears to have been no physical contact between the two.

But the 64-year-old collapsed to the ground near the Home Bargains shop after suddenly taking unwell during the disturbance.

Videos later emerged on social media of him receiving CPR at the scene after suffering what is believed to have been a heart attack.

The man was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where he remains today. His condition was last night described as serious but stable.

Police are now seeking the other man and have appealed for him to come forward to assist with enquiries in order to establish the full circumstances of what took place.

The man is described as being in his mid to late 20s, of slim build, around 5ft 10in in height and was possibly wearing a grey top.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff, of Greenock CID, said: "We're appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident and who hasn't already spoken to officers to come forward.

"In particular, we are appealing to the second man involved to get in touch with officers as soon as possible."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We received a report of a disturbance at the retail park on Custom House Way at around 1.55pm on Saturday afternoon.

"A 64-year-old man was found seriously unwell and has been taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital by ambulance.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

Information should be passed to the police via the 101 number, quoting incident 1820 of September 26.
