INVERCLYDE'S flooding troubles are the subject of new university research being carried out by a geography honours student from Gourock.

Rebecca Scott, who is studying at the University of Glasgow, is researching the impact coastal flooding has on two frequently affected local areas.

She is looking to speak to residents of Cardwell Bay in Gourock and the Esplanade in Greenock about the impact flooding has on their wellbeing.

The 21-year-old is is keen to talk to those who reside in the two hotspots, where coastal flooding is a particularly prominent issue.

However she says she'd also be happy to hear the views of anyone across Inverclyde about the matter.

Rebecca said: "When choosing my research topic for my dissertation, I initially had set my sights on going to New York City this summer to investigate urban heat impact on Manhattan.

"However, with travel restrictions my dissertation supervisor suggested I look somewhere closer to home which is when I came up the idea to look at Cardwell Bay.

"I've lived in Gourock since I was two so I know the impact coastal flooding has had on the area for myself, friends and family.

"I don't think anyone has ever conducted a similar study before.

"I chose to compare it with the Esplanade, which is somewhere that doesn't flood as frequently, to see the difference in responses.

"I'm looking to see the impact flooding has on people."

Rebecca, who is the deputy editor of Glasgow University's student newspaper, plans to involve business and the wider community in her work.

She said: "As well as being hopeful people will fill in my survey, I'm also looking to set up an interview with the owners of The Cove cafe and also anyone locally who would be willing to help me expand on my research.

"Eventually I'll be sharing my findings with the Greenock West & Cardwell Bay Community Council too."

Rebecca's online survey is open until October 10 and can be found here: www.bit.ly/30kNLUJ
