Bosses at Firewater have warned the future of the nightclub is at "grave risk" due to the impact of the 10pm coronavirus curfew.

The Indie nightclub penned an open letter to the Scottish Government yesterday evening as "a far cry and call to all who will listen" amid a fight "for an industry on the verge of abyss".

The venue wanrned jobs and businesses within the hospitality sector are "at risk" as it urged the Scottish Government to reconsider the curfew.

They pitched five recommendations for change in a bid to better difficult circumstances faced by the hospitality sector.

The letter states: "Venues across Scotland have spent thousands upon thousands of pounds to ensure their premises meet the ever-changing and evolving rules set before them. Creating safe, hygienic and responsible environments for the good people of Scotland to enjoy, only to be now severed at the head.

"This senseless action has no consideration for the hard-work the Scottish people employed within hospitality sector have applied so valiantly since the beginning of the pandemic.

"Not only for their livelihoods but so that we, the public, may enjoy some respite away from the daily sadness of this senseless disease."

The nightclub called for the reintroduction of midnight premises closure, clear paths of communication to and from the industry from the Scottish and local government, the reintroduction of background music, introduction of venue support officers and better finanical support.

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to make an announcement today on a 'circuit breaker' lockdown.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “We fully appreciate how difficult it has been for the hospitality sector, but these new restrictions are based on the fundamental need to reduce transmissions, which we know is key to keeping infection rates as low as possible.

“We are doing everything with the powers we have to help businesses, offering support which now exceeds £2.3 billion, including 100% rates relief for pubs and restaurants for the year.

"As the First Minister has indicated, we would like to have the flexibility to go further – but we are constrained by the fact that most of the key financial powers relating to job retention and related schemes are reserved to the UK Government.”
