VOLUNTEERS have worked tirelessly to transform Gourock's only charity shop into a paradise for bargain-hunting customers.

The Ardgowan Hospice shop on Kempock Street has reopened its doors after a big community effort to give it a much-needed overhaul.

The store, which was closed for three weeks while the work was completed, has been changed into a fresh and bright space offering clothing, trinkets and gifts in all shapes and sizes.

Work was carried out by staff and supporters who gave up their evenings and weekends.

Local tradespeople helped the charity out by completing work at low cost.

Shop supervisor, Angela Gallagher, is hoping customers old and new will pay the modernised store a visit.

Angela, who has been supervisor for two years, said: "We are delighted that the shop has reopened.

"During the time we were closed we had regular Kempock Street customers come and see us up at the West Stewart Street shop in Greenock as they were missing us.

"There are some lovely items for sale that have all been kindly donated to us."

Volunteer Karen McConaghy has upcycled the units in the shop to give them a fresh new look.

She said: "I decided to save some money and give all the units a lick of paint and put new handles on them.

"They look really good in the shop."

Customers were ready and waiting as the doors opened, with Tele reporter Amy Shearer thrilled to be asked to do the honours.

Savvy shopper Denise Munro, pictured, was the first person through the freshly painted doors.

Denise added: "I'm always being asked where I bought my clothes and it's usually the charity shop.

"My work friends say I'm a total bargain hunter so I'm very happy the shop has re-opened."
