A DEVOTED couple who were forced apart during lockdown have finally been reunited under the one roof.

Jim Shirra was parted from wife Margaret by the pandemic because she was in Balclutha Court and he was not allowed to visit the care home.

Mrs Shirra had lived there for two years and Jim visited her every day until restrictions were imposed.

The couple had to make do with seeing each other just once a week for a garden visit.

But now Jim has been moved into the home in Forsyth Street - and Margaret couldn't be happier with her husband back by her side.

Margaret, 73, said: "It's so nice to be back together."

Jim, also 73, is a former police officer, and Margaret worked as a nurse.

They've been married for more than 40 years and celebrated being reunited with a kiss and romantic meal for two at Balclutha.

Manager Alison Dickson said: "It's lovely to see, they are very devoted to each other.

"When Margaret moved in here, Jim moved to sheltered housing in Greenock and used to get a taxi up to see her every day.

"But when the restrictions came in, that was reduced to a garden visit once a week.

"It was so sad for him when he had to go home."

Alison says the couple are an inspiration to staff and other residents.

She said: "They are still so much in love and very devoted to each other.

"The two of them are characters as well.

"Jim has a twinkle in his eye and Margaret is the boss, she keeps him right.

"The staff had a lot of time for Jim when he was visiting Margaret and built up a good relationship with him."

Alison say the pair are coping very well despite a string of health issues.

She said: "They are very content.

"They can see each other every day, have their meals together and sit in each other's rooms.

"It is something positive considering the current situation."

The lovebirds have a daughter, Gayle, son David and four grandchildren.

Alison said: "Gayle is thrilled at how her dad had improved since he moved in.

"We are really happy for them.

"Hopefully he will stay and the two of them will be together forever."
