A BUSY takeaway in Greenock had to be shut down after an outbreak of coronavirus.

The Domino's outlet on Auchmead Road was closed for a deep clean after two employees tested positive for Covid-19.

Bosses confirmed the outbreak after comments made by a staff member on an online forum were passed to the Tele.

An employee had posted a message in a Domino's staff page saying that he had been told the premises would 'continue to operate'.

He said staff were to let managers know if anyone developed virus symptoms, before later adding that he had been told to delete the earlier message on the order of 'higher management'.

A source who leaked both messages to the Telegraph - and copied in local MP Ronnie Cowan and MSP Stuart McMillan - branded this 'disgusting behaviour from a food outlet'.

But the company insists it acted swiftly and decisively and followed all regulations.

The branch has now reopened.

Rachel Townsend, a spokesperson for Domino's, said: Two team members have tested positive for Covid-19 in our Greenock Auchmead Road store.

"They are now both self-isolating for 10 days in line with government guidelines.

"They are doing well and remain in contact by phone with the team.

"We are following public health guidance closely and all team members who have been in close contact have been notified by the store manager and will now also self-isolate for 14 days."

Domino's bosses have sought to reassure customers following the outbreak and say they have remained in contact with Inverclyde Council officials.

Ms Townsend said: "We would like to reassure people our top priority is the safety of our colleagues and customers and the store is currently closed whilst we perform a deep clean.

"We continue to work closely with government and our environmental health authority, who have approved our colleague and customer safety plans.

"We’ve introduced a number of safety measures including contact free delivery, simplifying our menu, increased sanitisation and improving our already frequent hand washing.

"We have installed protective screens, social distancing floor stickers and have clear customer safety signage in place for added levels of protection inside our stores."
