TODAY'S flashback focuses on 2003 - when it was announced jobs were safe at a top electronics plant thanks to an £11 million boost.

National Semiconductor planned to invest the massive amount at its factory in Greenock.

The cash was to secure 535 jobs at the Larkfield plant making chips for mobile phones and computers.

In other news, hard-working staff and pupils at a Port Glasgow school were celebrating after earning top marks in an inspection report.

Nearly 90 per cent of classes at Clune Park Primary were judged very good or good by Her Majesty's Inspectorate.

Local councillor Maxie Hill welcomed the findings, saying: "This augurs well for the regeneration of lower Port Glasgow.

"It will encourage young families to move into the area because there is a first-class school for their children to go to."

Also making headlines was a brave cancer survivor who went on to transform a charity shop into a major fundraising centre for research into the disease.

Cancer Research UK shop manager Daphne Shaw-Collins helped turn the West Blackhall Street store in Greenock into the charity’s hub for the west coast of Scotland.

During her five years in charge, the shop collected more than £600,000 to boost cancer research.

It was full steam ahead for people at the annual model railway show.

Enthusiasts thronged Greenock Town Hall for the event staged by Greenock & District Model Railway Club.

Guests from around Scotland came along for the two-day show, as well as a club from Newcastle.

Greenock Model Yacht and Power Boat Club, Greenock and District Model Aircraft Club and Thistle Model Makers of Linlithgow also played their part.
