MORE than 2,500 children and their families across Inverclyde are in line for a new source of funding from Social Security Scotland.

Families across the district are being encouraged to apply for the Scottish Child Payment - a benefit which provides eligible families with an extra £10 per week, per child.

Ministers have prioritised the early introduction of the scheme for families with children under six and these payments will begin in early 2021.

MSP Stuart McMillan said: "The Scottish Child Payment will directly tackle child poverty in Inverclyde and across Scotland.

"This support is needed more than ever."

Mhoraig Green, of Citizens Advice Scotland, says it's vital that every local family eligible for the benefit makes a claim.

She said: "We know that lots of families are facing tough times at the moment and are struggling to make ends meet - and this new money will help to make their lives easier.

"If families are unsure about what they're entitled to, or need help applying, our Money Talk team will be able to help."
