FESTIVE cheer is winging its way to people in the Port through a church angels initiative.

Volunteers from Port Glasgow New Parish Church have embraced the idea, with people donning wings to connect with people who feel isolated due to all the Covid-19 public health restrictions.

The project will run over the first three weeks of advent.

Reverend William Boyle said: "This year more than ever, people have perhaps felt less connected to their church community due to all of the restrictions that have been in place.

"The focus of this project is on creating connections between individuals in the church through small acts that can hopefully allow people to feel part of the wider community."

'Angels' are asked to drop off a small gift to a designated person on each of the three Sundays of advent.

The first two weeks people remain anonymous and on the third week angels introduce themselves with a Christmas card with a nice message.

Young Thomas Williams, 14, was happy to sign up to the project.

Thomas, a pupil at Port Glasgow High, said: "I thought it was a really good idea.

"It's nice to be able to cheer people up as it's been a bad year for lots of people because of Covid."

His mum Maureen, 48, of Mossyde Avenue, said: "This gives us a chance to contact people who haven't been able to get to church."

Maureen was an adherent at the former St Andrew's Church and William has been a churchgoer since he was five years old.

Hayley Hoodless, who has also signed up as an angel, is a new member of the church and excited to be involved in its venture.

Hayley, 35, of Irwin Street in Greenock, said: "Christmas can be a hard time for people living on their own as it is, without a virus.

"If this can brighten up one person's day, it is worth it."

At the end of the programme there will be a slideshow at the church service of all the activities.
