A SINGING group are rejoicing as they rise above the pandemic to celebrate their fourth anniversary.

Songbird Singing, an organisation offering one-to-one vocal lessons to Inverclyde's young people, haven't let Covid-19 restrictions spoil the special milestone.

Set up by songstress and vocal coach, Suzie O'Donoghue, the group has gone from strength to strength since it was formed in 2016.

Suzie now has over 70 children on the books.

Despite what has been a challenging year for all, Songbird Singing have doubled in size, moved into brand new premises on Greenock's Duff Street and taken on two new members of staff.

Suzie, 31, said: "I'm just so grateful for how we've not only survived but thrived during these hard times.

"When I was younger and used to sing I felt like I was flying.

"I wanted to pass that feeling on to other young people.

"Through their lessons I hope to build their confidence in a caring and supportive way."

As part of the birthday celebrations, West End leading lady Kerry Ellis - best known for her role as Elphaba in Wicked - has become a Songbird patron.

Suzie told the Tele: "I'm so excited about having Kerry on board, she's shown great support to Songbird.

"We have previously taken part in exclusive workshops with her and other top West End stars, so this is great news for the kids."

Previously, Suzie ran Songbird lessons from her Greenock home, but since the big move she's accumulated a waiting list of 60 young people.

Over lockdown the group spread a 'kindness challenge' far and wide online and 10 youngsters who attend the group were awarded with honours from Youth Scotland.

Other projects have included working with charity 'Headstrong', preparing young people for their exams, creating a children's rights charter and performing at the Beacon Arts Centre alongside local dance school Lucy's Dance Academy.

Suzie added: "This year could have been bigger had things been different, but we've still had such a great 2020.

"We've got lots of exciting things coming in 2021 and hope to start group classes when we are able to - we can't wait."
