A DRAMATIC rescue saw a man plucked from the River Clyde in Port Glasgow after his car plunged into the water.

The incident happened off Newark Castle just before midnight.

Police say a 32-year-old man has been arrested after having to be rescued.

Emergency services, including the coastguard, were called to the scene at 11.40pm last night.

It is understood they found the man sitting on the roof of his car several metres out into the water.

After being rescued he was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment before being released.

Police Scotland say the man has been charged and a report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.

Chief Inspector Graeme Gallie added: "We are currently working with the coastguard to the retrieve the vehicle."
