TWO suspects charged by police following the discovery of an alleged £1 million cannabis farm in Port Glasgow have appeared in court.

Vietnamese national How Hoang, 40, and a 16-year-old youth are accused of growing and being concerned in the supply of the drug.

They were arrested after community beat officers stumbled upon what is believed to be an industrial-scale cannabis production operation within a disused bingo hall in the town centre.

Both accused have also been charged with a contravention of the electricity legislation.

The Telegraph told last weekend how bobbies got a whiff of what they suspected was cannabis emanating from the former Plaza/Gala Bingo hall on the Port's Brown Street.

Eyewitnesses said that a number of police cars were quickly on the scene.

Numerous officers secured the building.

It is believed that hundreds of cannabis plants were discovered inside, in a significant recovery for the local force.

Inverclyde's new area commander, Chief Inspector Paul Cameron, has hailed the find.

He said: "It is a recovery with an estimated value of up to £1 million.

"This is down to good honest community policing."

Accused Hoang and the 16-year-old boy made no plea during a private hearing on petition at Greenock Sheriff Court.

The case has been committed for further examination and both have been remanded in custody.

The matters are due to call again next week.
