ELVES have taken over at schools across Inverclyde to help spread some Christmas cheer.

Santa’s little helpers joined every class in each of the area’s 20 primaries, including Ardgowan Primary in Greenock, pictured.

It was part of Inverclyde Elf Week, which featured a series of fun and educational events and activities designed to spread some festive cheer.

The elves are one of a number of initiatives to help lift the spirits of young people and staff and as an alternative Christmas celebration, with nativities, shows and other events all cancelled this year due to the pandemic.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “Our young people have suffered this year too so it’s great that they’re still able to have some festive fun with the help of some of Santa’s elves.

“With the usual nativity performances, end of year shows and trips to panto all cancelled, it was important to come up with alternative ways to lift their spirits and keep that festive magic alive.

“It’s safe to say that the adults have had plenty of fun too.”

Children were tasked with naming their new classmate and teaching them how to be an elf.

They were encouraged to share ideas through discussion, writing or illustrations and develop a showcase event, with the festive project being documented on Twitter.

Prizes were up for grabs for a class from each school for the most imaginative and inventive elf ideas.

Greg McGowan, Ardgowan Primary depute head, said: “We were delighted to have elves visiting each class in the school.

“The children in the lower school helped the elves learn new things and the children in the upper school were showing off all of their learning to the cheeky visitors.

“All of the elves were named by their class, with one of them now going by the name ‘Elfis’.

“At this time of year when there is usually so much singing and celebration in school, it has been nice to have something special to share as a school.”

An elf week launch video was also produced and is on the Inverclyde Council YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/inverclydecouncil
