A PORT Glasgow dad celebrated the year 2020 by walking the same number of miles and raising as much money for charity.

Andrew Rooney, 41, decided to do something for charity Prostate Cancer UK after meeting a group of survivors.

He spoke to one man who had survived prostate cancer twice and was inspired to take on his charity challenge.

Andrew, who lives in Devol, with his wife Alison, 37, and children Hannah, 13, and Euan, seven, said: "We just started talking in a pub and I found out this guy was a two-times survivor.

"The survival rates are so low for prostate cancer.

"I was blown away by his story and I was approaching that age group when I had to start looking at my health and wellbeing."

He initially took part in the first leg of Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling's charity walk in Glasgow around the main football grounds.

Andrew added: "I decided I wanted to do something on my own and set a challenge to walk 2020 miles and raise £2,020.

"I came up with the idea one day when I was walking along The Cut.

"I tried to average five miles a day.

"It was generally local walks because of the coonavirus restrictions, but sometimes I would walk from Port Glasgow to Bridge of Weir and beyond."

"Depending on the weather I could do 10 to 18 miles on a sunny day and I had a monthly target to meet."

Andrew, a contact centre manager, ended up exceeded his target to raise £2,480.

He said he was delighted to raise so much for charity and do something positive in a year that proved so difficult for so many people.

Andrew said: "It kept me focused and people have really engaged with it.

"My work colleagues and local businesses and people on social media have been very supportive.

"The miles I've walked in a straight line from Port Glasgow would have taken me to a village in Turkey.

"It was a great experience, when people see me out walking wearing the t-shirt they started talking to me about it and you realise how many people have been impacted by prostate cancer.

"It's also encouraged some people to go to the GP and I know a couple of people on the back of this who have managed to catch the cancer early."
