TEN more deaths of people with coronavirus have been recorded in Inverclyde over the last week.

The tragic figure emerged this afternoon in a new report issued by National Records of Scotland.

The deaths were registered between January 4 up to last Sunday.

This is the highest weekly figure for the district since the first wave of the pandemic last April.

It means that coronavirus-related cases accounted for almost a third of the full total of 34 people whose deaths were registered in the district - from all causes - during the same week.

Across Scotland, 384 deaths were registered where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, as the new strain of coronavirus takes a heavy toll.

The national figure is an increase of 197 deaths on the previous week.

Over the last week, the highest number of deaths occurred in North Lanarkshire (53), Glasgow City (50) and City of Edinburgh (34).

During 2020, a total of 132 people in Inverclyde who had the virus died.
