A CAMPAIGN to recruit an army of volunteers to help with the life-saving rollout of Covid-19 vaccines is under way in Inverclyde.

Labour's candidate at the Scottish Parliament elections is joining forces with Councillor Robert Moran, the health and social care convenor to encourage people to put themselves forward.

Volunteers will be needed to support frontline health workers in a bid to get as many people protected and as a quickly as possible.

With a lockdown in place and a high infection rate, there is now a race against time.

GP practices in Inverclyde with support from the local HSCP are already vaccinating the over-80s, with over 3,000 people in that category.

Francesca, who volunteered with a meals on wheels service during the first lockdown, said: "I will be signing up.

"I think it is really important that we take part and they will need as many volunteers as possible.

"This is a massive rollout and I would encourage as many people as possible to take part.

"It will help with the logistics.

"It is really is so important now that we get this vaccination rolled out to as many people as possible."

Local teacher Ms Brennan, who is hoping to become the area's first woman MSP, signed up during the first wave of the pandemic as a meal delivery driver with Branchton Community Centre.

She added: "It was great to support the local community and do something positive."

Councillor Robert Moran is keen to get the vaccination programme rolled out as quickly as possible.

He added: "We are delighted with the progress so far but we hope to get as many volunteers as possible to support our staff.

"Local people in Inverclyde are very good at giving up their own time to help."

Last March hundreds of local people stepped up to get meals out to people, deliver self-isolation supply boxes and support people in many other different ways.

Before Christmas a number of locals also volunteered at flu vaccination clinics held in Greenock Town Hall and other locations.

The Tele revealed last week how the town hall is also being earmarked as a location this time round for Covid vaccinations.
