THE main road through Greenock was closed in one direction by a multi-vehicle crash.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene on the A8 eastbound on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers said injuries were sustained as a result of the collision on Rue End Street, just outside the Fire Station.

A man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers say enquiries are continuing and that no one has been charged at present.

The Coastguard Rescue Team, who are based at the station, were also on the scene providing assistance.

One of the vehicles involved was left badly damaged.

The smash caused traffic disruption, with diversions away from the scene and tailbacks building up on Belville Street and other side routes.

The road reopened just over an hour after the accident.
