HOSPITAL sources have told the Telegraph that four people have tragically died as a result of the coronavirus outbreak at Orchard View in Greenock.

The Tele reported on Thursday how patients at the dementia care unit had passed away after contracting the virus.

Management from the health board confirmed the outbreak, but refused to say how many people had passed away.

A source at the 42-bed unit has now told us that four lives have sadly been claimed by the outbreak, amid fears this figure could rise.

Speaking to us on the condition of anonymity, the source said: "It started about two and a half weeks ago.

"Four patients have died.

"At least 12 have been infected.

"It is tragic."

The insider also disclosed fears that the death toll could increase.

The source added: "There are some patients who are being given palliative care.

"It is so sad."

We reported on Thursday how the Larkfield Road facility's Willow Ward has been closed as a result of the outbreak, said to have been discovered by February 3.

Orchard View provides continuing care for adults and older people, with a focus on dementia.

A relative of a patient who became ill said earlier this week that family members had been advised that staff and patients had been vaccinated.

She said she'd been shocked to learn that her loved one had since tested positive for the virus.

The woman, who also did not want to be named, said: "I heard that the virus was rife and spreading.

"I cannot understand why there's an outbreak if staff and patients have been vaccinated.

"Only one family member is allowed in to see each patient at a time.

"It's really concerning."

Management at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde have offered their sincere condolences to the families of loved ones who have passed away and stated that staff and patients were being tested regularly.

A spokesperson for the health board added: "We appreciate how worrying and difficult a time this is for our patients and their families and we apologise for any anxiety caused.

"Following identification of Covid-19 cases within the Willow Ward of the Orchard View facility, we have taken additional steps to protect our patients.

"The ward remains closed to new admissions.

"All staff are being tested twice weekly and patients who remain negative will be re-tested every four days until the ward reopens.

"Our staff continue to adhere to strict infection prevention and control guidelines during this time."

Orchard View opened in 2017 at a cost of £7m to replace the Dunrod Unit at the former Ravenscraig Hospital in Greenock.

It is split into two wards - Oak and Willow - and provides care for people with dementia and adults with mental health problems.
