PLANNERS say that a bid to transform an office into an arts academy should get the go ahead.

Prominence Academy of Performing Arts have lodged a bid to change the ground floor of the office building on Union Street where it meets Jamaica Street.

Objections were received highlighting parking, traffic and noise concerns but officials have recommended the application for approval.

The premises would be able to open Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm, offering music and dance lessons for up to 30 students.

There would be drama and musical theatre classes, choir rehearsals and morning parent and baby classes and possible weekend sessions.

Officials at the Municipal Buildings dismissed fears over noise and also rejected objections over increased activity around the premises.

They said: “It is accepted that the proposed use will bring increased pedestrian and vehicular movements into the area.

"This must, however, be considered in the context of the location on a busy thoroughfare.

“Whilst residents choosing to reside here may benefit from the proximity to local shops and other services within the town centre, they cannot reasonably expect the same degree of quietude as would be experienced within a wholly residential area."

Councillors will have the final say on the application at a planning board meeting due to be held next week.
