AN interior designer has been pounding the pavements to raise funds for charity after two people close to him were diagnosed with cancer.

Andrew Murry set out to run 56 miles during February after his uncle and one of his best friends found out they were facing a fight against the disease.

The 25-year-old says he 'wanted to do something to give back' to those looking after them.

The Greenock man decided to take on the challenge as a way to show his support and raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

Andrew, who is a commercial designer with a Glasgow firm, said: "I'm not a runner at all and the last time I really participated in anything like this was athletics in high school.

"I've never really been into fitness so it was a bit daunting.

"But I wanted to do something to play my part while I couldn't be with my friend or my uncle with all the restrictions.

"Before I could back out I put it online and started a fundraising page so everyone could hold me to it.

"It gained so much momentum within the first few hours and people have been so generous in donating."

Andrew has been joined by friends Eabha Carroll and Mark Ross who have also been taking on the challenge to show their support to their mutual friend who was diagnosed with leukaemia last year.

He said: "It was an awful shock and it's quite frustrating not being able to see anyone at the moment or be together with our friends.

"Both are responding well to treatment which is great news.

"This has been a way to keep us all connected while we can't be together, especially myself, Eabha and Mark who have been meeting outside to run together too.

"I'm really grateful to everyone who has already supported me.

"It's been tough but I've enjoyed it and definitely think I'll keep up running as it's helping break up my day whilst I'm working from home."

Andrew has been covering two miles per day and has smashed through his initial fundraising target.

His total is currently sitting at £1,331 and pledges to his appeal can be made online by visiting bit.ly/3pRYU9z
