INVERCLYDE'S MP insists that the election race in May will be perfectly safe and a fair fight despite the pandemic.

The SNP's Ronnie Cowan reacted after comments from Labour council leader Stephen McCabe, who had raised safety fears over the poll

But Mr Cowan says the local authority is 'more than capable' of delivering a fair poll while protecting everyone's health.

Cllr McCabe had admitted he had 'serious concerns' over the contest being held in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, with voters due to cast their ballots on Thursday May 6.

Mr McCabe pressed senior officials on the issue during a full council meeting as he confessed he was worried whether the local authority would be able to sufficiently protect the safety of voters and staff.

He also suggested parties not being able to get out and campaign could lead to an unfair result.

Municipal Buildings boss Aubrey Fawcett - returning officer for the area - expressed fears of a 'democratic deficit' as he suggested people who would normally go out to vote may choose not to.

But Mr Cowan believes the outbreak shouldn't affect turnout.

He said: “I have every confidence in the council to hold a fair, open and safe election.

"Due consideration will obviously be given to keeping officials and the electorate safe but I believe the council is more than capable of doing this.

“Postal votes will help to sustain a high turnout.

“I have not seen any evidence to suggest other elections held in other countries have resulted in an increase in infection.

“Obviously, it’s not an ideal situation but every election presents issues regarding turnout.

"The 2019 general election was held in December with the real possibility of heavy snowfall but that wasn’t even mentioned, we just got on with it.

"There is no reason the turnout should be affected and one year into the pandemic we have become more aware and safety-orientated.

“I am sure all measures that are required will be in place.

"I understand there will be concerns but I don’t think they are insurmountable.”

The Tele revealed last week that the count for the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency will not be held overnight, in a departure from the norm.

It will take place at the Waterfront Leisure Centre on the Friday, with an exact start time still to be determined.

Current SNP MSP Stuart McMillan, Labour candidate Francesca Brennan and Liberal Democrat Jacci Stoyle have so far confirmed they will contest the seat
