RIVETED readers at a Gourock school celebrated World Book Day in style thanks to a kind donation from a local supermarket.

St Ninian's Primary pupils are a well-read bunch thanks to Morrisons in Greenock dropping off books and costumes to mark World Book Day.

Store community champion Carol Mountain and personnel boss Janette Connelly dressed up as famous book characters and visited the school in style to mark the national event.

The kind duo donated items for the school to enjoy in the lead up to Easter.

Carol, who was disguised as The Cat in the Hat, said: "Each year to mark World Book Day we choose a school to support by picking a name out of a hat.

"This year we are delighted to offer our support to St Ninian's and hope the young people will enjoy making use of the range of items.

"We wanted to dress up to cheer everyone up and do something nice for the children."

The supermarket employees will also choose the best bonnets in this Easter's headgear contest, and provide all primary one pupils with a sweetie bag for taking part in the competition.

Janette, who on the day sported a Mary Poppins look, told the Tele: "We've been working throughout the lockdown with the community and want to make sure we keep people's spirits up where we can.

"We usually hold lots of various community events throughout the year, but this year has been very different for us.

"Despite the restrictions and setbacks, we've still ensured that we've continued to support local people, groups and charities."

On hand to collect the donations were pupils from primary three - the oldest age group currently attending classes in line with Scottish Government advice - and depute head teacher, Siobhan Currie.

Mrs Currie told the Tele: "The children have been taking part in various activities such as bringing in their favourite book and taking photographs of them reading in unusual places.

"It's been interactive and fun and we've ensured both the youngsters in school are taking part as are the ones still learning from home.

"We are very appreciative of this donation from Morrisons."
