CARE home residents are keeping active during lockdown thanks to a kind gift from their local football club.

Jonny Roy, Morton in the Community's Health Project Worker, launched the 'ActiveAGE' project to assist elderly members of the community stay physically fit.

The project also aims to encourage social interaction between residents throughout the eight care facilities Jonny works with.

Whilst he is unable to visit the various homes involved in ActiveAGE, Jonny has delivered equipment and resource packs for staff and residents to use in-house.

His latest drop-off was at Alt-Na-Craig House on Lyle Road where the equipment has already been put to good use.

On hand to accept the items were Sandra MacAulay and Eleanor Pickett, part of the recreation team at the residential home.

Sandra said: "The residents really enjoy having Jonny in, they love participating in the games he organises and they all look forward to it.

"This equipment will allow us to keep everyone active and having fun until it is safe for Jonny to visit us again.

Eleanor added: "Everyone is missing having Morton in the Community in, but we hope come the summer months we can start up activities again.

"We really appreciate the equipment and resources."

Jonny says he has had excellent feedback from the equipment and resource packs and is looking forward to returning to the homes in the area.

He told the Tele: "It's been very strange not seeing residents and staff, as before Covid-19 we would be in the homes and running sessions with everyone.

"I wanted to find a way to keep everyone active whilst we can't be in the homes, so I spent a few weeks coming up with an online resource pack and deciding what equipment to give out.

"The pack has sitting, strength and balance exercises and links to YouTube videos for the residents to make use of."

As well as focusing on the physical health of pensioners across Inverclyde, Jonny included historical resources that he hopes many will appreciate.

He added: "I've put in Morton pictures and football memories for the residents to hopefully reminisce about and enjoy and created a Morton quiz too that has proved popular.

"I've had great feedback about it so far."
