A GENEROUS Gourock jeweller has come up with a crafty way to raise cash for a charity currently supporting her good friend who is battling leukaemia.

Big-hearted Eilish McArthur, who runs By Eilish - a jewellery business borne out of the pandemic - has pledged to donate funds to Blood Cancer UK throughout the month of March.

The 22-year-old product design graduate is selling hand-made earrings in support of Niamh Edelsten, girlfriend of her cousin Euan.

She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in January.

Niamh felt unwell before Christmas and was believed to be suffering from a persistent chest infection.

Doctors later discovered she had cancer.

To show her support for the brave 23-year-old whilst they cannot be together due to current lockdown restrictions, The Glasgow School of Art graduate decided to do her bit for the national charity.

Eilish told the Tele: "We all got such an awful shock when Niamh told us her news.

"But she has been so brave and thrown herself into fundraising for the charity.

"In just 24 hours the family raised £10,000 to support the work of Blood Cancer UK.

"I've become really close to Niamh during the time she's been dating my cousin, so I wanted to do something to play my part and honour her bravery.

"We all feel a bit helpless just now as we can't go to see her during her treatment, so this is my way of showing support."

With each purchase, Eilish is providing an information card on signs and symptoms of blood cancer, to help raise awareness of the disease.

Eilish, who lives with parents Sheena and Joe and brother Connor, told the Tele: "I remember Niamh saying she wasn't feeling great, but none of us ever suspected this.

"She's an amazing person and so positive and is responding well to treatment, which is great news."

The jeweller - who also ran a fundraising campaign for Breast Cancer UK in October - has been recognised by the Blood Cancer UK.

The organisation's chief executive has been sporting her own pair earrings made by Eilish.

Eilish said: "I'm so grateful for all the orders so far, I've totally taken over the kitchen in the house as I have been so busy!

"This started as a hobby, but I've been so well supported over the past few months."
