CONSTRUCTION of Greenock's new £20 million health centre is now complete.

The building has been handed over to the health board, with services expected to start moving over from May.

Bosses from Inverclyde health and social care partnership expect the Dempster Street facility to be fully operational in June this year.

A year ago all work was suspended on the site as the country went into its first ever lockdown.

But within weeks builder BAM were back on site, as the health centre was considered a priority.

Now the work is finished after some delays because of the Covid restrictions imposed in the last 12 months.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has confirmed the handover had taken place.

The new health centre replaces the existing Duncan Street building.

The Tele reported earlier this week that the site could be cleared and turned into a residential development.

The building, which was constructed in 1978, has been put up for sale by the health board.

No asking price has been set.

Property specialists Montagu Evans, who are marketing the building, said: "It is a prominent development opportunity, close to the town centre, near the waterfront and well serviced by public transport.

"The building could be suitable for a range of uses including office, community/third sector uses.

"The site also benefits from designation in the Inverclyde Local Development Plan for residential development.

"The designation indicates a capacity of 35 units, however we consider that this number could be increased."
