A FIGHTING fund has been launched to save a boxing club in Port Glasgow.

Port Glasgow BC have launched a crowd-funder and they are also aiming to land match funding from Inverclyde Council.

The cash would be used to get the former Glenpark Rangers building ready for returning members.

Coach Kenny Crighton, who has been running the club for 25 years, feared he might not be able to re-open after the gym was flooded.

But he says things are looking up after members rallied.

Kenny said: "We will received £2,300 from the council from their Grants to Voluntary Organisations fund, if we can match it.

"The council has been absolutely brilliant.

"We've raised £1,700 already.

"Lots of people in the community have come forward to help us, even members who live abroad have been in touch."

The hall needs re-rendered and the roof is being repaired while dry rot must also be attended to.

Nicky Anderson, 46, who has been a member for 10 years, set up the online appeal.

She said: "We have a lot of folk who have mental health problems and kids with special needs come to the club and you can see a difference in them.

"It's great for their confidence and discipline - they listen to Kenny."

Members have missed the club during lockdown and are keen to get back in the ring.

Susan Thomson, a committee member, said: "I'm desperate to get back, it's been so frustrating.

"I've missed meeting up with people, and the banter.

"I have mental health issues and the exercise gives me a focus.

"It takes my mind off things, and there's the company as well.

"I would be devastated if the club closed.

"I have made friends that I might not have made anywhere else, and this is a place to connect with them."

Kyle Wilson has represented the club and is also a coach.

He said: "The club has been a huge part of my life.

"I've been coming here for 20 years and I will be so pleased when it reopens."

Kenny plans for that happen in May and says he is looking forward to seeing everyone.

He said: "We have started holding outdoor sessions at Kelburn Castle for adults and children.

"I think the future is looking bright now."
