EXCITEMENT is building in the east end as a new £2 million community centre takes shape.

Work is well under way on the new state-of-the-art Craigend Resource Centre - and it should be finished by September.

The building will replace the old Craigend hub, which has been outgrown by the team's success over the years.

Centre manager Brian Power says he is excited to see the progress.

Brian said: "It's one and a half times bigger but we want to keep that close community feeling.

"It's great to see the building going up.

"It's all ready for the windows to go in and we can't wait until September."

The new centre will feature a cafe, creche, multi-function hall, information technology training room, laundry, kitchen and meeting spaces.

The existing centre will be demolished when the new one is completed and the space will be used for extra parking spaces and a new children's playground.

Brian admits he has mixed feelings when he thinks of the old building coming down after 26 years of happy memories.

He said: "It will be sad to see this place come down, people have been coming along here since they were kids.

"After 26 years, it will be the end of an era.

"Covid has made it a wee bit different because we had already stopped in a way before 'closing down' to move."

Brian is making an appeal to local businesses and folk in the community to help him put the finishing touches to the new centre by donating or coming up with fundraising ideas to help purchase new furniture and equipment.

He said: "All the capital costs are there but we are looking at ways to raise money to buy new furniture to kit it out."

If anyone would like to contribute to the furniture fund they should call Brian on 01475 786739.
