GOUROCK Golf Club is welcoming back existing and new junior members as it gears up for the new season.

Junior convener Ian Samuel has a busy programme of coaching, competitions, fun events and team matches lined up as he and his junior sub-committee plan for the months ahead.

For three consecutive Sundays during April the younger boys and girls in the section underwent some valuable coaching with their putting, pitching, iron play and driving skills being honed.

Gourock is lucky enough to have a short five-hole ZIG-ZAG course running the length of its first fairway which allows children new to golf to build up their confidence and skills on what is effectively a short pitch and putt course.

The club are most grateful to Ross Campbell and Barry Higgins of On-Site scanning for sponsoring this facility.

Throughout the coming six months the junior coaches will be guiding the boys and girls through a new Pathway Into Golf which has been modelled on Scottish Golf’s recently-announced national junior framework.

This well-structured programme will see the boys and girls gradually progress from the ever popular Tuesday night academy beginners sessions, through the ZIG -ZAG course and eventually working their way onto the Blue then Red then Yellow measured courses that the club has laid out.

Each junior will be rewarded and incentivised along the way with credits being rewarded for attending coaching sessions, skill challenges, playing on the course, entering competitions and gaining - as well as reducing - their playing handicap.

Credits can then be used to purchase either food and drink in the clubhouse restaurant or buying equipment and clothing in the PRO shop.

The club are very lucky that Stephen Gallacher of GES Developments has stepped forward to support this new and exciting programme.

A new round of Tuesday night academy sessions which are open to members and non-members alike will commence on Tuesday May 18.

So there is a lot on offer for boys and girls between the ages of seven and 17 at the club.
