THE sun was shining as over 100 would-be rugby stars enjoyed their first taste of the game.

Greenock Wanderers arranged 'Wee Wandies' sessions for youngsters aged three to five to enjoy at Fort Matilda.

The sporting sessions were also educational and had a focus on arithmetic.

Sessions ran over four days and the club's rugby development officer AJ Guthrie says he plans on making them a permanent fixture all year round.

He told the Tele: "We initially planned to run just two sessions, but after the response we received we decided to put them on at the weekend too.

"Many of the youngsters have siblings or parents who play with us, so it's nice to start them young.

"The sessions are something different and the kids were full of energy and they had so much fun."

Although the sessions were led by volunteers, AJ hopes to create permanent community coach posts.

He said: "Everyone who has helped out are current coaches and volunteers, but we hope to introduce official community coach roles as this becomes more regular.

"Wee Wandies is educational and it has been attended by both girls and boys, which we're delighted about.

"Hopefully this has given them a taste of what they can expect if they continue training with us as they grow up."
