INVERCLYDE'S civic leader honoured the victims of the Greenock Blitz on the 80th anniversary of the deadly wartime air raids.

The landmark commemorations had to be radically scaled back due to ongoing public health restrictions caused by the pandemic.

Provost Martin Brennan attended at Greenock Crematorium to lay a wreath in memory of the victims.

Over the course of May 6 and 7 in 1941 a total of 328 people were killed in the bombings, with over 600 injured.

Almost 100 of those who lost their lives were under the age of 18.

Provost Brennan said: “While Greenock bore the brunt of the bombings, the events of the sixth and seventh of May 1941 had a devastating impact on communities and families right across Inverclyde.

“Although the Covid-19 crisis won’t allow us to mark this dark chapter in our history properly, it’s vital that we don’t let this milestone anniversary pass without remembering those who were killed, as well as the many thousands more who were affected by this awful tragedy."
