THE number of people still on furlough in Inverclyde is falling month on month.

At February 28, the number of local workers on the UK Government's coronavirus job retention scheme stood at 4,000 - with 2,200 women and 1,800 men seeing the state covering their wages.

The government says the majority of furloughed staff - 840 individuals - were employed in accommodation and food services.

Provisional figures for March 31 show that the number of people on furlough fell by 300, to 3,700.

Of that number, 2,000 were women and 1,700 men.

The number of furloughed staff in accommodation and food services declined from 840 to 800.

Over 33,000 jobs across Inverclyde were eligible for support under the scheme during the two months.
