THE new £22m Greenock Health and Social Care Centre is opening its doors on Monday.

The convenor of Inverclyde's Integrated Joint Board Councillor Jim Clocherty today hailed the new facility as bringing state-of-the-art healthcare right into the heart of the community.

From next week onwards health and social care services are moving in to the building on the former Inverclyde Academy site.

As well as GP practices serving a population of around 30,000 there will be a host of specific services based within the new health centre.

Councillor Clocherty said: "The new centre is fantastic and the building really has the wow factor.

"But more importantly it will provide the community with the health and social care services they deserve.

"It will make such a huge difference to the delivery of our integrated health and social care services.

"I think if the pandemic has shown us anything, it is the importance of health and social care working ever close together."

The new state-of-the-art centre will include four GP practices, a community hub, dentistry, podiatry, physiotherapy, sexual health, treatment rooms, district nursing, health visiting, school nursing, home care teams, child and adolescent mental health, speech and language therapy and outpatient clinics.

It will have a cafe and outside there are landscaped grounds with a courtyard named after Greenock nurse Janice Graham, who was one of the first victims of Covid-19.

Work started on the site two years ago and was briefly held up last March as a result of the pandemic.

The new centre replaces the nearby Duncan Street building, which was built 40 years ago and has now been put up for sale.

It's expected that the new health centre will be fully operational by June.
