PINT sized Portonians are having fun in the fresh air as they make the most of their brand new outdoor reading area.

Pupils at St John's Nursery have welcomed a new addition to their playground area and are enjoying learning in new ways.

Nursery staff, along with the help of parents, created the new storytelling area - complete with hand carved wooden chairs, a storytelling shed.

The 24 children at the nursery have been enjoying outdoor play in the sandpit, wooden pirate ship and mud kitchen.

Senior staff member Donna Buirds told the Tele: "We are absolutely delighted with the way it has all come together.

"It's been a real joint effort between the nursery staff, community and Inverclyde Council to bring this space to life.

"It has been an ongoing project for us to create this area, as when we first arrived it was just concrete.

"To see it all come together and now have our reading area is the icing on the cake for us."

The Mary Street facility was also made over by parents before lockdown last year.

Donna said: "Before the pandemic we had parents who work at Cigna take a community day to come and help us with the outdoor area.

"Staff have also got involved where they can too, we've made the wooden signs.

"The children helped with the display too.

"There's such a focus on outdoor learning just now with all the restrictions - so it's great we can utilise this space and spend as much time as possible outside.

"Everyone loves it."
