A PORT Glasgow man and his best pal have completed a charity running challenge in memory of a much-loved relative.

Andy Hemphill, a primary school teacher, has been running 5k every day for a month in aid of Ardgowan Hospice.

The 28-year-old clocked up the kilometres alongside school friend Sean Gray, who originally hails from Inverclyde but now lives in Liverpool.

The passionate pair took on the challenge in their respective areas in memory of Sean's gran, Elizabeth Mitchell, who passed away last September from lung cancer.

Known locally as 'wee Betty' - the pensioner was a keen supporter of the hospice after her husband was supported by them.

Andy and Sean got so much support that they smashed past their £500 target before the month was out.

Andy, who is set to get married to partner Kelsey in July, told the Tele: "Sean and I have both competed in races and charity challenges before, but we'd never taken on anything quite as difficult as a 5k run each day.

"It's great we were able to do it together and keep each other going.

"Sean was actually visiting home at the start of the challenge, so we got a wee chance to run together to start us off.

"I've also been joined by my mum, Liz, on the runs too - it's been a challenge but we had great support."

Andy, who teaches at St Paul's Primary School in Paisley, suggested all funds went to Ardgowan Hospice to honour Elizabeth.

Sean added: "Owing to the support the hospice provided to my family, it was a favourite charity of my gran.

"When Andy suggested we do the challenge in memory of my gran it really meant the world to me."
