TRADITIONAL tunes played by a talented group of pipers and drummers will soon be heard live by pensioners across Inverclyde.

Inverclyde Pipes & Drums are back rehearsing again in preparation for a tour of care homes across the area.

Pipe Major John MacLeod led the band in a series of successful outdoor gigs for residents last year.

Due to the success of the tour, the band is back - tuned up and ready for this summer.

John said: "We've already had care homes getting in touch to find out when we will be paying them a visit, so it's clear that people really enjoyed it.

"It gives us and the residents something to look forward to and gives us an incentive to keep practising.

"We weren't able to get together for a while due to Covid restrictions but it's great to be back playing again.

"We've been going round the care homes for about eight or nine years now.

"It seems to bring people a wee bit of cheer."

The pipers and drummers will be playing live outside in the grounds of local homes as the summer progresses.

John and the team practice up at Tower Hill in Gourock when the weather is good and are indoors at the Gamble Halls in the winter.

The pipe major, who has played the pipes for around 60 years, is also looking for pipers and drummers of all ages to bolster the band.

John says the social aspect and appreciation of the music is the best bit about being involved.

He added: "We all really enjoy playing the instruments and enjoying the music.

"There's a fellowship aspect to it.

"We enjoy entertaining people and it's a great feeling when it all works together."
