A KIND Port Glasgow woman who created a colourful garden space for her neighbours has been praised for her dedication to her community.

Katie Owen moved to Falconer Street after living in Berwick Road in Greenock for 15 years.

As soon as she arrived, Katie noticed a grassed area in the middle of the courtyard and began thinking about how she could transform it into something attractive for the people around her to enjoy.

Katie has since made the area into a bright and beautiful garden display to be enjoyed by her neighbours.

Katie, 65, said: "I was looking out of my window one day and I just thought, 'I could put something in there to make it nice for people'.

"I've been collecting bits and pieces over the years.

"I'm not a great gardener, I've just been learning as I go along.

"It's a good project for me.

"It's become quite popular and people from other parts of the town come up to see it as well."

The colourful garden is currently home to a whole range of blooms - including petunias, lillies, hollyhocks, tulips, pansies and marigolds.

There's even a water feature, a selection of planters of different shapes and sizes, and an array of rose bushes - most of which were gifts from Katie's grandchildren.

The Port grandmother says the project has helped her develop a passion for gardening.

She added: "I'm doing it for other people.

"The pensioners who live here are always telling me they like looking out of their windows at it."

Katie's neighbour Kevin Hutchison, 45, says she deserves praise for taking time to create a lovely spot of greenery.

He said: "Katie is just amazing and deserves recognition for what she does.

"I don't get out very much due to my mobility issues and the garden really cheers me up when I'm looking out of my window.

"She's done it all herself and she looks after the area so well.

"It's such a lovely thing for her to do and we all want her to know how much we appreciate it."
