COMMUNITY campaigners have welcomed the installation of a pedestrian crossing outside the Wemyss Bay Co-op store.
The crossing was a condition of the planning consent given for the Co-op, which opened in November 2019.
Developers of the site attempted to remove the planning condition prior to the store opening, but withdrew their application the following month following a public backlash.
Paul Cassidy, chairman of Inverkip and Wemyss Bay Community Council, said: "The community council has been campaigning alongside local villagers, demanding that Transport Scotland which manages the A78, take action to ensure the developers finally install the pedestrian crossing following a number of near-miss accidents with vehicles trying to enter and exit the store and pedestrians trying to cross the road.
"I’m delighted that after campaigning with villagers for over a year we finally have the pedestrian crossing installed.
“It was ridiculous that the Co-op was allowed to open without the crossing being in place."
