TOP pro golfers are to descend on Gourock next month as part of a tee-rrific charity tournament to mark a landmark anniversary.

Gourock Golf Club is holding a charity day on Monday July 5 as the centrepiece of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

The Cowal View clubhouse recently underwent a £250k overhaul and is now set to help welcome 1,000 visitors on the day of the historic event.

European Tour professionals including Nicolas Colsaerts and Lucas Bjerregaard will play nine holes on the day - with local golfers able to scoop the chance of playing alongside the famous faces.

The club are hoping to raise around £25,000 for charity from the event.

A kind-hearted international member, originally from Gourock, has agreed to double the final total.

Bill Hawthorne, who has been overseeing the plans alongside captain Neil Beaton, said: "We wanted to do something special to mark our 125th anniversary and this is the perfect way to do it.

"We didn't know what we would be able to do with all the Covid-19 restrictions, but with things beginning to ease we feel confident in being able to hold the event.

"It's going to be incredibly memorable for the club and our members and we're also looking forward to being able to support some brilliant causes."

Benefiting from the event will be Ardgowan Hospice, Children’s Hospice Across Scotland (CHAS), Calum’s Cabin and Kidney Kids Scotland.

International member Kirk Beaton, the nephew of captain Neil, has also very generously agreed to match the proceeds raised from the event pound for pound.

Bill said: "We think this event will break all previous records and we are so grateful to Kirk for his incredibly generous proposal.

"Tickets also include entry into the prize draw which has over 60 prizes - some of them are 'money can't buy' experiences.

"We've had an excellent uptake so far and we are all looking forward to the day."

As well as the invitation extending to the 700 adult members, young golfers on the day will have the chance to take part in workshops with the professionals.

Bill added: "Our young golfers will have the chance to learn from the best - it's an excellent opportunity.

"We've also extended the invitation to junior members at other local clubs to come and participate in the workshops.

"This event will go down in the club's history."
