THE Treasury has promised Inverclyde's MP Ronnie Cowan that it will look to safeguard free access to cash for local people.
Mr Cowan raised the issue following a loss of bank branches.
Speaking in the Commons, economic secretary to the treasury John Glen gave him reassurances, but Mr Cowan says he believes legislation will be required to ensure that banks still serve the community.
