A TEE-riffic golf tournament to mark Gourock Golf Club's a landmark 125th anniversary has raised over £60,000 for local good causes.

Big names such as Paul Lawrie, Nicolas Colsaerts and Lucas Bjerregaard came to the course on Monday for a charity tournament as part of the celebrations.

The club had set out to raise £25,000 to assist four charities - Ardgowan Hospice, Children’s Hospice Across Scotland (CHAS), Calum’s Cabin and Kidney Kids Scotland - but after smashing through their target, were able to help many others.

The local hospice benefitted from a big £30,000 cash windfall, whilst CHAS and Calum's Cabin each received £8,000.

Kidney Kids Scotland were presented with £5,000, whilst the Inverclyde Foodbank, Dreams Come True Inverclyde, Children in Poverty Inverclyde and Port Glasgow Otters all received £2,000.

The club also generously handed over £1,000 to St John's Ambulance and Street Pastors Inverclyde.

The final total was the result of international member Kirk Beaton, the nephew of club captain Neil, generously agreeing to match the proceeds raised from the event pound for pound.

The club also had their funds topped up by Duncan Hawthorne, brother of organiser Bill, who kindly gave £10,000 to the cause.

Kirk, who flew home from Hong Kong for the event, told the Tele: "I'm always very glad to support local charities - everywhere I go I fly the flag for Inverclyde.

"I'm very proud of my Gourock roots and events like these are great for the community, especially when they help so many local people."

Tickets were priced at £5 and included entry to the raffle, with prizes including playing with the pros on the day.

Club officials, including captain Neil, vice-captain Norma Ramsay, event leader Bill and general manager Allan Warwick, presented charities with cheques throughout the day.

Allan said: "We are delighted to have been able to expand the list of charities who are benefitting from the charity day.

"It is excellent to raise both money and awareness of what these good causes do."

Hospice fundraising officer Elaine McNeill said: "We are so thankful to Gourock Golf Club for their continued support - we cannot thank them enough for what they do for us.

"Receiving £50,000 from the Beaton family last year and then this incredible amount this year is incredibly generous.

"We've had a tough year as we haven't been able to do any proper fundraising events, so this donation will allow us to continue offering first-class care to patients and their families in Inverclyde."
